Spring Break

Spring break was a great opportunity to flush out all my current thoughts on my thesis.  I completed a full set of drawings based on my thinkings.  There is a series of transitions from interior to exterior spaces.  There is a sense of circulation and fluidity through the plan.  Sun and wind studies show a strong orientation on the site.  The diagrams show the site as a progression of knowledge.

I explored the language of the building through elevation as well as section.  The first floor has the conference room, lobby, cafe and classrooms.  The second floor has more classrooms, lounge, library and offices.  The experience cabins are located near the Neponset River.

Preliminary Plans

Here is the jump from trace paper to computer - which of course means detail.  Like I said, I'll have to scan in my first set of plans, so the jump now may seem big!  But these plans and sections present orientation based on the earlier sun studies, as well as the incorporation for consideration for circulation.

It was great to get plans on paper, but this scheme lacks a front door, fluidity and a clear sense of the surrounding topography.

Placement of Program and Sun Studies

Unfortunately my next set of plans need to be scanned in.  But here are the sun studies for the two options:

Early Program Concepts

These drawings are early concepts of major programmatic spaces.  There is a division of 'public' areas, learning areas and experiencing areas.  Here are the divisions and micro spaces:
Public -
Lobby
Checkin
Offices
Library
Lounge
Public speaking/conference area

Learning -
Classrooms
Cafe
Outdoor learning

Experience -
Weekend Cabins -
 Living Space
 Sleeping Space
 Kitchen
 Outdoor Space

I have clumped the major three programs together for the first iteration of exploration.
Option 1 - Summer Study
Option 1 - Winter Study

Option 2 - Summer Study

Option 2 - Winter Study

This is a preliminary perspective idea of transitioning spaces, interior to covered exterior to exterior.

Workin' on it!

I've had two reviews on the preliminary design of my thesis.  I plan to upload model and sketch pictures this week!  Keep checking in!

Summary

The past posts are excerpts from the preliminary thesis book submitted in December.  It was crucial to make the jump from research idea, and to begin to form a tangible display of the idea.  The posts show the important site characteristics that pertain to the ideas of "Dwelling Activities."

I plan to finish my study site model this week, and I'll begin to design with the beginning of the semester starting next week!  Wish me luck!!
